ACY Yarn
ACY Yarn (Air-covered yarn) is a special type of cover yarn that has a spandex sheath and can be used to produce elasticated fabrics. It is a core-sheath type of yarn that can be produced either by staple spinning or continuous filament spinning process. It can also be divided into single-covered yarn (SCY) and double-covered yarn (DCY).
Spandex Covered Yarn is a very popular construction for knitted fabric applications such as sportswear, undergarments, lingerie, and even upholstery fabric. It is made by wrapping inelastic filament or short fiber yarn around stretched and elongated spandex yarn. The sheath yarn can be a staple spun yarn or a continuous filament yarn and can be made from both natural or synthetic fibers. The sheath can be produced with different levels of elasticity as needed for the product, such as high stretch and low to moderate recovery.
It is an excellent choice for garments such as tights, stockings and swimwear that need a combination of stretch, softness and breathability. The sheath is usually a cotton or nylon staple spun yarn with a soft and silky texture. It can also be made from a blend of polyester and other fibers such as bamboo or silk. The sheath can be produced with a wide range of colors to meet the demands for specific products.
The air-covering process is the most common method to make this type of yarn. The sheath and the tensioned and elongated spandex core yarns are cofed together and passed through an air nozzle where high pressure compressed air is applied to create interlaced spots of sheath yarn that cover the strands of the core yarn. This makes the finished composite yarn without any twist, allowing it to be easily dyed when the bobbin is dipped in color.
Another method to produce this type of yarn is mechanical core-spinning. In this process, the sheath is produced by wrapping an inelastic filament or short fiber yarn on top of the bare spandex core. The wrapped sheath can be a staple spun or a continuous filament yarn but it cannot be a roving. This process is less expensive than the air-covering technique because there is no need for any air compressors or nozzles.
When the air-covered yarn is made, it is important to separately calculate the lycra and polyester content. This can be done by weighing 1 meter of the air-covered yarn and then taking it again after removing the lycra from it. The percentage of each component varies as the air pressure changes. For example, if the pressure is increased from 4 kg/cm2 to 8kg/cm2, the amount of lycra in the yarn decreases and the amount of polyester increases. This is because the loop density of the air covered yarn increases with increase in pressure. This is why it is important to consider the change in pressure when calculating the denier of the air covered yarn.
